Origin and history

The castle of Volonne, built between the 17th and the second half of the 18th century, stands on the municipality of the same name, in the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. This monument, now transformed into a town hall, bears witness to the architectural and social evolution of the region throughout the centuries. Its partial listing as historic monuments in 1987, followed by a ranking for certain parts in 1992, underscores its heritage importance.

The castle is distinguished by remarkable elements such as its large honorary salon, its vestibule, and its staircase adorned with gypseries. These spaces, classified in 1992, illustrate the artistic refinement of the period. Although the building belongs in part to the commune, some sections remain private property, reflecting a complex history combining public and private heritage.

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, where Volonne is located, was at that time marked by a rural and artisanal society. The castles, often centres of local power, also served as places of representation for elites. Volonne's architecture and current function embodies this duality between the seigneurial past and administrative modernity.
