The entire old cemetery, including the Tomi type house built on the plot (Box BD 147): inscription by order of 26 January 2012

Origin and history

The former cemetery of Basse-Vallée is a historic funeral site located on the territory of the commune of Saint-Philippe, in La Réunion. Created at the end of the 18th century, it was used until the 19th century, during which time it hosted burials today partially preserved. Among the tombs still visible, some have remarkable architectural forms, such as an elevated altar of a pyramid or half-cylinder structures adorned with a death-headed cross.

The cemetery was subsequently abandoned, but its heritage importance was recognized by an additional listing of the Historic Monuments on January 26, 2012. This protection covers the entire site, including a Tomi-type house located on the plot. The place, owned by the commune, bears witness to funeral practices and the local history of Saint-Philippe, in the south of the island of Reunion.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its role as a vestige of Creole funeral traditions and human occupation in this region. Although some practical information, such as accessibility to the public, is not specified, the site remains a significant example of the Reunion heritage linked to the colonial and post-colonial period.
