Origin and history

The ancient cemetery of Beaune-la-Rolande, contemporary of the northern chapels of the local church, dates back to the 16th century. Today it is mainly identifiable by the traces of its gallery and portal, adorned with Latin inscriptions evocative of mortality: "MOVIR AGREE IT IS SEVRE NVL DOES NOT REMEMBER" and "(ETECCE) EQVVS (PALLIDVS) AND QVI (SEDEBAT) SVPER MORTEM (NOMEN) ILLI MORS". These elements, still visible on the bedside of the church, testify to its funeral use and its architectural integration with the nearby place of worship.

The cemetery appears on the cadastre of 1816, confirming its persistence until the early 19th century. However, it was destroyed during the same century, leaving only partial remains, including the portal listed as Historic Monument by decree of 15 April 1911. These fragments provide an overview of the funeral practices and religious art of the Renaissance in the Centre-Val de Loire region, while highlighting the fragility of the heritage in the face of urban transformation.

Owned by the municipality of Beaune-la-Rolande (département du Loiret), the site is now a silent testimony of local history. Its portal, the only protected element, embodies the memory of the deceased and medieval beliefs related to death, while recalling the evolution of sacred spaces in French villages. The accuracy of its current location is considered "a priori satisfactory", with an approximate address at 7 Rue du Général Crouzat.
