Origin and history
The former estate of Giraud, located in Arles on the road of Salins, is an emblematic example of the farmhouses of Camargue, these farms typical of the region. Built in the 1st quarter of the 18th century, its historic heart has retained a remarkable authenticity, reflecting the lifestyles and social organization of the rural estates of the era. The site includes a castle, outbuildings ( stables, manager's house, cabin), a park and an access road, all protected since 2022 for their heritage value.
The area bears witness to the socio-cultural history of the Camargue Mas, where agricultural activity (breeding, culture) structured community life. These farms played a central role in the local economy, often organised around an owner family and seasonal or permanent workers. Their architecture, adapted to climate and functional needs, blended habitat, storage spaces and production sites, as evidenced by the preserved buildings in Giraud.
The registration of the estate as a Historic Monument in April 2022 allowed to protect its constituent elements: the castle, the outbuildings (including an old stable and a cabin), as well as the park and its access path. This official recognition underlines the importance of the site as a representative heritage of the Camargue, while guaranteeing the preservation of its architectural and landscape authenticity.
