Origin and history
The Old Eden-Concert, located in La Ciotat, is a historical monument built at the end of the 19th century, more precisely in the last quarter of this century. This place is inseparable from the history of cinema, as it was the scene of the first public screenings of the Lumière brothers. The original hall, inaugurated in 1889, consists of a central building body with a wing in return in 1900. These architectural elements, excluding subsequent court additions, have been protected since 1996 by an inscription under the Historical Monuments.
Eden-Concert is best known for hosting the first commercial session of the Lumière brothers in 1895, marking a turning point in the history of 7th art. This place symbolizes the technological and cultural innovation of the time, while reflecting La Ciotat's pioneering cinematic activity. After operating as a theatre for almost a century, the building had to close in 1985 due to its failure to comply with safety standards. Today, there remains an emblematic place of memory, owned by the municipality.
The monument is located at 2 boulevard Jean-Jaurès and 24 boulevard Georges-Clémenceau, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department (region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur). Although its GPS location is considered poor (note 5/10), it retains a major heritage value, linked to its role in the emergence of cinema. Protected elements include the main building body and its wing in return, reflecting its original architecture and historical importance.
