Origin and history
The former military genius and the so-called House of the Commander of Arms are two emblematic military buildings of Saint-Denis, on the island of Reunion. Built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, they illustrate neo-classical architecture inspired by the post office hotel of the era. Their location in the Barachois district, at 3 and 8 Place Sarda-Garriga, makes them significant elements of the city's historic urban landscape.
A plan of 1822 revealed the existence of the first military engineering constructions at the present site, replaced in the late 1830s after their destruction for the construction of the post office. Engineering then moved to the artillery park, where a new project was developed in the 1840s. The works, begun in 1842, were completed in 1844. The site is divided into two parts: in the east, offices and an arsenal organized around an inner courtyard; to the west, the Director's office housing and its dependencies.
The facades, roofs and plated areas of these buildings have been included in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments since 3 April 2007. Their architectural style and history reflect the strategic importance of Reunion as a French military territory in the Indian Ocean in the 19th century. Today, these buildings remain major testimonies of that time, although their access to the public is not clearly documented.
