The former hotel of the General Farm, in whole with the court preceding it, excluding the hangar, the whole contained in the cadastre section AB parcel 199, as represented on the plan annexed to the decree: inscription by order of 4 November 2024

Origin and history

The former hotel of the General Farm of Guise is a historical monument inscribed by ministerial decree in 2024. Located at 80 rue de la Citadelle, it embodies the administrative architecture related to the collection of taxes under the Old Regime. Its inscription covers the entire building and its courtyard, excluding a modern hangar.

The General Farm, a tax institution created in the 17th century, managed the collection of indirect taxes on behalf of the State. Farm hotels, such as the one in Guise, served as offices and lodgings for general farmers and their employees. These buildings often reflected the economic and political power of their occupants, while integrating into the local urban fabric.

The monument is now owned by the municipality of Guise, in the department of Aisne. Although its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources, its protected status makes it a major architectural and historical testimony for the Hauts-de-France region. The approximate location, noted as "passible" (level 5/10), suggests an identification to be refined.
