Origin and history
The former Hotel de voyageurs Sainte-Barbe, located in Plombières-les-Bains, is attested from 1636 in front of the great bath of the city. Although some parts may go back to the 16th century, the building was completely renovated or rebuilt in the 18th century. Architectural elements such as bays, stairways and chimneys date from this period. The hotel, built on a narrow and sloping plot, consists of two bodies of buildings separated by a courtyard and connected by a gallery resting on an arch in basket handle.
The wrought iron grid of the balcony, added at the beginning of the 19th century, is the work of Alexis Chevreux, then owner of the hotel and director of the forge of Blanc-Murger. The interior features of the hotel remain partially visible, including the kitchen on the ground floor, which retains its ground-beam ceiling, fireplace, niches and a seven-fired vegetable garden. The upper floors housed rooms equipped with fireplaces and old doors with characteristic fittings.
The building was classified as a Historical Monument by order of 9 October 2024, protecting the entire building and its plated ground. Its history reflects the importance of thermal establishments in the region, as well as the architectural and social evolution of passenger hotels between the 17th and 19th centuries.
