Origin and history
The Hotel du Halgouët, also known as Hotel Bonin de la Villebouquais, is a private hotel located in the heart of Rennes, in Ille-et-Vilaine. Built in 1733, it is one of the buildings rebuilt after the fire of 1720 that ravaged the upper town. Its architecture reflects the classic 18th century style, with a main house body flanked by two wings and a courtyard closed by a gate.
The hotel was designed in 1729 by the Rennes architect François Forestier de Villeneuve for the advisor of Coniac. Its construction began in 1733, integrating elements such as a large stone staircase with ironwork and woodwork adorning the living rooms. It occupies the site of an old 17th century hotel, and its facades, roofs, woodwork and staircase have been protected since 1966.
Located at 9 Gambetta Street (former Trassart Street) and 8 Rue du Docteur-Regnault (ex-rue des Violiers), the hotel illustrates the aristocratic urban planning of Rennes after the reconstruction. Its monumental portal and arcade easements surrounding the court underline its prestige. Today, it bears witness to the Breton architectural heritage of the Enlightenment.
