Origin and history

The former abbey house of the Premontrés, located in Villers-Cotettes in the department of Aisne (Hauts-de-France), was built in 1763 by architect François II Franque at the request of Abbé Richard. This building, representative of 18th-century religious architecture, was originally used as a residence for the abbots of the Order of the Premonstrates, a canonial order founded in the 12th century. Its style reflects the classical influences of the time, with a structure adapted to the needs of an abbey house, combining residential and representative functions.

In 1795, in the context of revolutionary upheavals, the abbey house was confiscated and transformed into a town hall, marking its transition from the religious domain to civil and administrative use. This conversion is part of a broader process of reallocating the assets of the clergy, characteristic of the post-revolutionary period. However, the monument retained its original architecture, bearing witness to its dual history between sacred and secular.

In the mid-19th century, between 1858 and 1860, architect G. Pottier changed access to the building by replacing the old fence wall with two pavilions and a gate, thus modernizing its appearance while preserving its historic character. These developments reflect the urban developments of the time, where public buildings were often embellished to assert their central role in municipal life. The abbey house was finally classified as a Historic Monument in 1995, recognizing its heritage and architectural value.

Today, the old abbey house still houses the city hall of Villers-Cotterêts, symbolizing the continuity between the religious past of the city and its contemporary administration. Its location at 1 Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville makes it a landmark in the city centre, while its ranking protects its remarkable elements, such as the facade and the original interior arrangements. The building remains a tangible testimony of local history, from the Ancien Régime to modern France.
