Origin and history

The former portal of Troarn Abbey is a medieval building originally located at the St.Martin Abbey in Troarn, Calvados. This portal, dating from the 14th century according to certain sources (although Monumentum evokes a 13th century construction), was moved in the 19th century to serve as an entrance to the castle of Banneville, in the commune of Banneville-la-Campagne. This shift illustrates a common practice of reusing religious architectural elements after the Revolution or during private restorations.

The gate is now located on the northern limit of Banneville-la-Campagne, near the town of Sannerville. It was listed as a Historic Monument on June 25, 1928, recognizing its heritage value. The coats of arms he wore were burned, probably during periods of unrest or political change, making their identification impossible. This detail highlights the alterations suffered by many religious monuments over the centuries.

In addition, the remains of St. Martin's Abbey in Troarn, from which this portal originates, were partially classified by decree of 30 April 1921. This classification includes a rectangular building still visible in Troarn, separate from the displaced gate. The current location of the portal in Banneville-la-Campagne, although documented, is sometimes confusing due to its remoteness from the original abbatial site.
