Origin and history

The former presbytery of Gustavia, located on the island of St. Bartholomew, dates from 1822 and is part of the first half of the nineteenth century. This building, linked to the Catholic church, illustrates the architectural features of the Antillean region adapted to local climatic constraints. It includes a masonry terrace, steps, appendices and gardens, all protected under the Historic Monuments since 2002.

The ensemble, built between 1822 and 1842, reflects the influence of the Swedish period on urban planning and the island's parcellar. The presbytery underwent transformations in the late 19th century, while maintaining its historical character. It is now owned by the commune and bears witness to the religious and cultural heritage of Saint Barthélemy.

The inscription as a historical monument, effective since 28 March 2002, covers not only the presbytery itself, but also its related elements (terrace, gardens, etc.). This site, located on Rue des Normands (or Rue du Roi Oscar II according to sources), remains a symbol of local history, mixing colonial heritage and architectural adaptations specific to the West Indies.
