Origin and history
The former Priory Saint-Martin, located in Cotignac in the department of Var, is a medieval architectural complex composed of a church, a prioral house and a barn. This site, classified as Historic Monument by order of January 10, 2024, also includes the remains of an old cemetery on Parcel No.110. The buildings, spread over cadastral plots 110, 1895, 1897 and 1898, illustrate the religious and community importance of the place throughout the centuries.
The priory, now owned by the commune, is part of a Provencal landscape marked by monastic history. Although the details of its foundation and evolution remain partially documented, its architecture and its location on the way to Saint-Martin testify to its central role in the spiritual and social life of Cotignac. Such monuments often served as places of prayer, reception for pilgrims and economic centres for local communities.
The recent protection (2024) of the whole, including church, house and outbuildings, underscores the desire to preserve this emblematic heritage of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The exact address, 2274 Chemin de la Chap Saint Martin, allows to locate the site, although the cartographic accuracy is considered fair (level 5/10) according to available sources. No information is provided on the current modalities of visit or use (open to the public, rental, etc.).
