Origin and history

The Saint-Aubin Abbey of Angers originated in a funeral basilica (memoria) built between 550 and 576 to house the tomb of Bishop Aubin (529-550), mentioned by Grégoire de Tours. Transformed into a monastery in the 6th and 7th centuries, it became a canonical community in the 8th and 6th centuries, before becoming a Benedictine abbey again in 966 under the impetus of monastic reform. Bishop Théodulf d'Orléans was even imprisoned there from 818 to his death in 820, illustrating his political and religious importance.

In the 12th century, the abbey built a Romanesque cloister initiated by Abbé Robert de La Tour-Landry (1127-1154), from which the oriental gallery and carved arcades representing biblical scenes such as the history of Samson or David and Goliath remain. The Saint-Aubin Tower, a 54-metre fortified bell tower erected in the 12th century outside the Abbey, served as a watchtower in the Middle Ages. It was listed as a historical monument in 1862 and now houses temporary exhibitions.

The convent buildings were entirely rebuilt between 1668 and 1692 by the monks of the Saint-Maur Congregation, a period of which a monumental staircase, the wooded sacristy and the walled capitular hall remain. The French Revolution dispersed the monks, and the abbey was destroyed in 1811 to give way to the present Michel Debré Square. The site, transformed into a prefecture in the 19th century, still includes medieval and classic remains, such as the arches of the cloister or the halls of the Second Empire.

The Saint-Aubin Tower, a symbol of the abbey, had various uses: lead tower in the 19th century, museum of industry, and then meteorological observatory. The successive protections (classifications in 1901, 1904, 1968; inscription in 2007) underline its heritage value. The excavations of 1997 revealed burials and confirmed the monastic enclosures from the early Middle Ages, while the frescoes of the cloister, partially damaged by a Gothic vault added in the 14th century, testify to its artistic influence.

The abbey thus illustrates almost fifteen centuries of history, from the Merovingian origins to its conversion into an administrative seat, passing through its Maurist golden age. The protected elements — tower, cloister, sacristy, staircase — offer a unique panorama of angeline religious architecture, from novel to classic, while anchoring the monument in the contemporary life of Angers.
