Origin and history

The abbey Saint-Martin-des-Champs, founded in 1060 as royal priory and third daughter of Cluny, settles on the site of an alleged miracle of St. Martin. From the original 11th century church, there remains only the base of the bell tower (the top of which was razed in 1808), while the trilobed abside of the second church, the 13th century refectory, and more recent convent buildings (such as the cloister rebuilt from 1702) remain. Nationalized in 1789, the abbey was assigned in 1798 to the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers, created in 1794 on the proposal of Abbé Grégoire to democratize technical knowledge.

The Conservatoire, originally intended to train engineers through demonstrations of scientific objects, settles in old monastic buildings. The architect Léon Vaudoyer largely remodeled the site between 1838 and 1872, adding amphitheatres and reorganizing the court of honor. The Prioral Church, transformed into a engine room, welcomes in particular the pendulum of Foucault. Classified as a historical monument in 1993, the Abbey becomes a symbol of the transmission of techniques, with a museum rich in 80,000 objects, including 2,500 exhibits.

The collections, initiated by Jacques de Vaucanson and his mechanical firm (1752), are enriched by universal exhibitions and inventors' gifts such as Lavoisier and Foucault. The museum, renovated between 1992 and 2000, presents seven thematic collections (scientific instruments, transport, energy...) organized in four time periods. The old church houses monumental pieces, such as Bleriot's aircraft or Scott's steam engine, while the reserves, transferred to Saint-Denis, preserve 15,000 technical drawings and 20,000 photographs.

The site, served by the Arts et Métiers metro station (developed in 1994 by François Schuiten), combines medieval heritage and industrial innovations. The museum offers thematic visits, educational workshops, and a reference documentation centre. Its role in safeguarding contemporary scientific heritage, entrusted by the Ministry of Higher Education since 2003, makes it a key player in the preservation of French technical memory.

The construction periods run from the 11th to the 20th century, with major redevelopments under the July monarchy and the Second Empire. Despite modern additions (twentieth century laboratories), the ensemble retains its historical character, classified for its buildings prior to the twentieth century. The museum, labeled Musée de France in 2002, remains a living place for the dissemination of knowledge, between monastic heritage and industrial revolution.
