Origin and history

The former cannery Alexis Le Gall, located in Loctudy in the Finistère-Sud, was built in 1901 by industrialist Jean-Marie Vallière des Fillières, specialized in sardine canning. Originally named cannery Vallière, she employed nearly 60 workers and experienced social tensions, such as the 1906 strike for wage claims. After the sardine crisis and the death of its founder, the factory was bought in 1916 by Alexis Le Gall, a shipowner of Douarnenez, who released it in 1919 after enlargements.

During its golden age in the 1920s, the cannery modernized its equipment (dryer, autoclave, crimpers) and operated in an intense seasonal rhythm, from April to September. Workers, mostly local women, worked under strict conditions but described as confident, with days that could extend until midnight. The manufacturing process, entirely manual, ranged from washing sardines to cooking in copper basins, then canning and sterilization in autoclaves.

The cannery declined from the 1930s to foreign competition and closed definitively in 1954. However, the premises and machines were preserved by the descendants of Alexis Le Gall, notably Jean-Philippe Chapalain. Ranked a historic monument in 2016 after an inscription in 2014, the factory enjoyed a complete restoration (2016-2021) and became a unique museum in France, illustrating the industrial heritage of fisheries. It opened to the public in September 2021, after being acquired by the municipality of Loctudy.

The factory is distinguished by its exceptional state of conservation: buildings, machines (44 series of classified objects) and original spatial organization are intact. Among the outstanding elements are the sauce laboratory, the master house (1890), the tidal store, and tools such as drying grills or condiments presses. Its classification is explained by its rarity — the only cannery of the early 20th century still functional in Europe with two other examples (Norway, Portugal) — and its ethnological value, offering a tangible testimony to the working and living conditions of Breton workers.

Located on Rue de la Grandière, close to the northern wharf of the port of Loctudy (only landing dock until 1933), the cannery used its strategic location to supply fresh fish. The sardines, delivered in wicker baskets, were processed by artisanal methods, with steps such as brine, tinning, or steam cooking. Production, intense during the season, ceased in winter, and the factory closed temporarily.

The present museum showcases this tangible and intangible heritage, including family archives and working stories. The project was supported by the Heritage Lotto in 2018. Visitors can discover the entire production chain, from machines still operational to wooden shipping boxes, as well as elements of daily life, such as the company safe or Alexis Le Gall's office. This site ranks among the few global examples of in situ conservation of a historic agri-food plant.
