Origin and history
The former École des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Étienne, inaugurated in 1859, is an iconic neo-Louis XIII building, characterized by its rectangular structure on two levels and attic. Its main façade, adorned with seven bay spans on the ground floor and rectangular upstairs, reflects a neat architecture. Two wings in return frame a garden, while a northern greenhouse, built in 1927, remains as a witness to subsequent developments. The use of decorative stones and an imposing rock in the lower part create a natural contrast with the classic style of the building.
The monument, partially listed as historical monuments since December 12, 2013, protects its facades, roofs, the northern greenhouse, as well as its garden with its masonry elements (closure, rock, borders). The École supérieure d'art et design was owned by the commune of Saint-Étienne and housed until 2007, before its transfer to the Cité du design. The site, located in Place des Ursules and rue Henri-Gonnard, illustrates the educational and architectural evolution of art schools in France at the hinge of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its historical role in local artistic formation. The accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (level 5/10), and the monument remains a notable example of the industrial and cultural heritage of the Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, etc.).
