The entire old school (cad. AM 192): registration by decree of 21 November 2012

Origin and history

The old school of the village of Remire, located in Remire-Montjoly in Guyana, dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. Built in 1892, it now retains its original appearance despite a degraded state. Its walls, entirely covered with wooden shingles and finely worked frame, reflect a craftsmanship typical of the time. The building embodies Creole architecture, with simple volumes, symmetrical facades and blade carpentry, characteristic of local constructions.

This building, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 21 November 2012, is a major witness to the formation of the municipality of Remire-Montjoly. It symbolizes the educational effort deployed in Guyana at the end of the 19th century, a period marked by the development of public infrastructure in this overseas territory. The quality of its construction and its almost unchanged state make it a remarkable architectural heritage, now owned by the municipality.

The school is located at 416 Route du Mahury (RD 1 Robert-Sampson Avenue), in an environment where traces of the colonial past and adaptations to the tropical climate are mixed. Its inclusion in the inventory of Historic Monuments underlines its importance as a preserved example of Creole school architecture, while raising the question of its preservation in the face of the current deterioration.
