Origin and history
The former hotel of the Faye Forest family, located in Treignac, is an emblematic building of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Its rectangular stone staircase turret, dated from the 15th century, is distinguished by a door of entrance moulded in a braid decorated with an armored shield. Two windows, one in braid and the other in straight lintel, complete this architectural ensemble. The interior courtyard, closed by a Louis XIII style cochère door, bears witness to subsequent changes.
Built probably in the first half of the sixteenth century, the hotel undergoes notable modifications at the end of the same century, as evidenced by the date of 1585 engraved on the entrance door. In the 18th century, court elevations were resumed, marking a new phase of transformation. Between 1873 and 1903, the building became a free school, managed successively by the brothers of Saint-Viateur and the sisters of the Saint-Coeur-de-Marie. Threatened by ruin in 1962, it was finally demolished to give way to the local post office, leaving only the partially modified stairway tower. Some elements, such as bay frames, were re-used in Masseret, Uzerche Township.
The stairway tower, the only protected vestige, has been listed in the Historical Monuments since 1963, with an update of the decree in 2011. Property of the municipality of Treignac, it recalls the aristocratic and then educational history of this place, now disappeared with the exception of this architectural fragment.
