Origin and history
The former Saint-Pierre Prioral Church of Parthenay-le-Vieux is a Catholic religious building built in the middle of the 11th century. It is located in the village of Parthenay-le-Vieux, now attached to the commune of Parthenay, in the Deux-Sèvres department. Its architecture and history reflect the importance of the Priorals in the medieval religious organization in Poitou.
According to a local tradition reported by Monumentum, a lord allegedly raised this church to repentance after accidentally crushing a child's head during a hunt. This tragic theme is depicted on the building's portal, illustrating a legend related to its foundation. The church is one of the first protected historical monuments in France, classified in 1846.
The building is now open to the public on a daily basis, thanks to the commitment of voluntary residents. Its management and preservation are the responsibility of the commune of Parthenay, stressing its anchor in local life.
