Origin and history
The former Chelevières starch factory, located in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region, was built in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Founded in 1870, this plant specializing in starch production illustrates the local industrial dynamism of the period. Its architecture includes a manufacturing workshop, a warehouse, as well as housing dedicated to the boss and foreman, reflecting the social organization of small rural industries.
In 1946, the site's activity became diversified with the addition of a sawmill, marking an adaptation to post-war economic needs. The starch mill ceased operations permanently in 1959, but some of the premises were reused as a warehouse for the sawmill. Today, the workshop retains all its production equipment, classified as building by nature, as well as an educational presentation explaining the manufacturing processes. This industrial heritage, registered with the Historical Monuments since 2013, offers a rare example of in situ conservation of original machines and structures.
The site, located at 2 At the Fécolerie, is accessible only by appointment, highlighting its preserved character and historical interest. The accuracy of its location is assessed as very satisfactory (note 8/10), and its official address is referenced in the Merimée database under the code Insee 54125 (common Chenevières).
