Origin and history

The former gendarmerie of Nancy, located at 7 rue des Cordeliers in the Ville Vieille district - Leopold, is an iconic building of the late 19th century. Built in 1872 under the direction of the architects Léon Vautrin and Charles-Louis Bottelin, it adopted an architectural style dating back to the 18th century. Its historic entrance was at 3 rue Jacquot, reflecting its integration into the urban fabric of the time.

The building is distinguished by its quality of execution and its harmonious integration into the landscape of the Netherlands. Its facades and roofs, protected since 19 December 2005 as historical monuments, testify to the importance attached to this type of public construction under the Second Empire and the Third Republic. A statue of Hubert Lyautey, made by François Cogné, sits in front of the building, adding a commemorative dimension to the site.

Owned by the commune of Nancy, this former gendarmerie embodies both an architectural heritage and a symbol of the police and military organization of France at the end of the 19th century. Its ranking reflects the desire to preserve a heritage representative of this pivotal period, marked by major urban and social transformations in Lorraine.
