Façade sur rue et Roof : inscription by decree of 26 March 1934

Origin and history

The former gendarmerie of Bergues is a historical monument located in the town of Bergues, in the department of the North (Hauts-de-France). This building, whose street façade and roof are protected by a registration order of 26 March 1934, bears witness to the local architecture and administrative history of the region. Its official address, 12 rue du Sud (formerly 20), is referenced in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 59067.

Gendarmerie, as institutions, played a central role in small French cities in the early twentieth century. They ensured public security, the judicial police and often served as a point of contact between the State and citizens. In Bergues, as in other communes in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, these buildings also reflected the social organization and public order needs in an area marked by its industrial and border history.
