Origin and history
The Masonic Temple of Carentan, erected at the end of the 18th century, is a former meeting place of the Freemasons located in the city of Carentan-les-Marais, in the department of Manche, Normandy. It was built to house the lodge "Les Cœurs unis", affiliated with the Grand Orient of France, and officially inaugurated on 18 September 1788. This building, marked by its Masonic history, preserves decorative elements like a plaster bas-relief.
The building, situated in the stalemate of the Saules, was recognized for its heritage importance and listed as historic monuments by order of 30 December 1983. This ranking reflects its role in local history and the preservation of the Masonic heritage in Normandy. Although the sources mention its past use, they do not specify its current status or conditions of visit.
The lodge "Les Cœurs unis" reflects the rise of Masonic societies in France on the eve of the French Revolution, when these gatherings played a role both social and intellectual. The temple of Carentan thus illustrates the anchoring of these practices in the French provinces, far from the major urban centres like Paris. Its architecture and decor, although partially documented, make it a rare example of Masonic heritage preserved in Normandy.
