Origin and history

The former Maison de la Charité is a building located in L-Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This monument, whose precise origins are not detailed in the available sources, was partially inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 24 June 2020. Protected elements include the fronts and roofs of the Mignard and Brun wings, two interior stone stairs, a chapel, as well as external elements such as the fence wall and the floor of the plot concerned.

This type of building, often linked to charitable or religious works, reflects the social organization and self-help practices of local communities in the past. In the south of France, especially in Provence, charities played a central role in welcoming the poorest, distributing relief, and sometimes education or care. Their architecture, often sober but functional, was integrated into the urban fabric while marking the presence of institutions dedicated to the common good.

Recent protections, such as that of 2020, underline the desire to preserve these heritage testimonies, even when their detailed history remains partially documented. The listing of Historic Monuments ensures the preservation of the most significant architectural elements, while offering official recognition of their historical and cultural value.
