Origin and history
The old gate of Plessier-sur-Saint-Just is a historic monument located in the department of Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region. Dating from the 17th century, it is located precisely at 224 rue de Compiègne, in this town of Picardie. This architectural vestige, though modest, bears witness to the civil constructions of that period in rural villages in northern France.
The door was inscribed as a Historic Monument by ministerial decree on 23 February 1951, which underscores its heritage importance. The location indicated in the Merimée database corresponds to the current address, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10). No additional information is available on its original use or possible sponsors.
In the 17th century, the villages of Picardie, such as Le Plessier-sur-Saint-Just, were often organized around defensive elements or territorial marking, such as gates or ramparts. These structures were used as much to control access as to symbolize local identity. The economic activities of the region were then based on agriculture and handicrafts, with a rural society structured around lords and parish communities.
