Origin and history
Dijon's powderbox was built in 1885 according to the plans of General Séré de Rivières, as part of the fortifications built after the French defeat of 1870. This project was part of a desire to modernize urban defences, typical of the military architecture of the Third Republic. The site, located on Rue d'Auxonne, included a four-level main building, a guardhouse, and a stone wall, reflecting the technical standards of the time.
In 1994, the whole — including the floor, the gate, the enclosure wall and the powder box building — was included in the inventory of historical monuments by ministerial decree. This protection recognizes its heritage value, linked to its role in Dijon's military history. Between 2003 and 2004, part of the site was converted to a residence named California, illustrating a civil reappropriation of a defensive legacy.
Architecturally, the powder storey is distinguished by its rectangular storey building, its two-sided tile roof, and its facades adorned with playful colours. Materials, such as stone for frame frames and corner chains, highlight a robust and functional construction. Today owned by a public establishment, the site retains traces of its original use while integrating into the contemporary urban landscape.
Historical sources, such as the works of Jean-François Bazin (Le Tout Dijon, 2003) or Roger Gauchat (Memoires de la CACO), document his evolution. The powderbox is also part of the network of military monuments of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, testifying to strategies of defence post-French-Prussian war. Its state of conservation and its location (147-149 rue d'Auxonne) make it a tangible landmark of this past.
