Origin and history
The former prison of Gaillac is a historic monument located in the town of Gaillac, in the department of Tarn, in the Occitanie region. This building, registered with the Historical Monuments since 1927, played a notable role during the Second World War, during the Vichy regime, as a place of imprisonment for political prisoners.
On June 12, 1944, a French resistance group, including Renée Taillefer, organized a bold operation to release forty political prisoners. These prisoners were then taken and hidden in a maquis near Carmaux. This action illustrates the commitment of the local Resistance against the occupation and the regime.
After the war, the buildings of the former prison were converted into barracks for the gendarmerie. They were used for this purpose until 2013, when a new gendarmerie was built, putting an end to this function. Today, the site remains a testimony to the region's prison and resistant history.
