Origin and history
The former sugar factory of Miréréni, located in Chirongui on the island of Mayotte, dates from the second half of the 19th century. Created in the 1870s, this sugar cane farm, albeit of small size and short duration (less than 25 years), has a complete set of machines still in place, some of which are rare, such as the cane mill or the horizontal motor. The site includes remains of industrial buildings (caudières, chimneys, turbines), as well as traces of a "master house" today almost entirely destroyed.
The sugar estate was also composed of "shops" with an area of 250 m2, of which only foundations and a section of an eroded wall remain. Ranked a historic monument in 2021, the site fully protects the remains of the factory, including machinery, facilities and associated buildings, located on plots 34 and 36 of the cadastre. The property is shared between the department and private owners, and its exact location is estimated as "passible" (precision 5/10).
The factory illustrates the economic history of Mayotte in the 19th century, marked by attempts at agricultural industrialization, often ephemeral but technologically innovative for the time. Its recent ranking highlights its heritage interest, both for its architecture and for preserved machines, rare in the region. The site offers a material testimony of the sugar production methods of the time, in an island context where this activity played a localized social and economic role.
