Origin and history
The Casers de Toury-Lurcy, located in the Nièvre (Burgundy-Franche-Comté), form a building of the first half of the 19th century, designed to house the workers of the forges and brickworks then in full operation. Their utility architecture, marked by a barlong plane and spans rhythmic by brick pilasters, reflects a rational organization designed to optimize space for a large number of occupants. Inside, the houses, spread over two levels, reproduce a repetitive plan, characteristic of the collective dwellings of the nascent industrial era.
This monument, which is now part of the Historical Monuments (a decree of 13 May 2002 for its facades and roofs), illustrates the close link between urbanization and industrial development in rural areas. The region's forges and brickworks, active in the 19th century, attracted a large labour force, requiring accommodation infrastructure close to production sites. The Caserns thus embody a social and technical heritage, where brick – a local material – dominates both the structure and the surrounding economic activities.
The location of the site, specified at address 14 Route de Dornes (INSEE code 58293), enjoys geographical accuracy which is considered very satisfactory (note 8/10). Although the sources do not mention contemporary use (visit, accommodation), its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments underscores its heritage value, linked to the working history and industrial architecture of the Nièvre.
