Ancient oppidum (Case B 423, 424, 114): classification by decree of 19 July 1979
Origin and history
The ancient L-oppidum of Flaumont-Waudrechies is a major archaeological site of Protohistory, located in the department of the North, in the Hauts-de-France region. Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 19 July 1979, it illustrates the strategic importance of the oppidas during this period, often associated with defensive, economic or symbolic functions for the Gallic communities. Cadastral plots B 423, 424 and 114 delineate its current location, although its precise location remains subject to an accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10) according to available sources.
Protohistory, the pivotal period between the Iron Age and Roman antiquity, sees the development in northern Gaul of proto-urban urban structures such as the Oppidas. These sites, often perched on heights, served as refuges, places of exchange or political centres for the Gaulish peoples. In the Hauts-de-France, a region marked by a dense human occupation from the prehistory, the oppidas testify to cultural dynamics and contacts with the Mediterranean world before the Roman conquest.
Although the sources do not specify the specific details of Flaumont-Waudrechies, this type of monument generally reflects a hierarchical social organization and intensive artisanal or agricultural activities.
