He proposed his erection in 1639.
Origin and history
The covered fountain of Anduze is an emblematic building located in the municipality of Anduze, in the department of Gard, in Occitanie region. Built in the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its unique architecture: a pedestal supports a basin surmounted by a circular roof in the shape of three superimposed bells. The coloured painted bricks cover a wooden frame, itself supported by four cast iron columns adorned with doric capitals. This monument, classified by decree of 21 February 1914, reflects the craftsmanship and aesthetics of the time.
An inscription on the fountain mentions his erection proposed in 1639 by the Marquis de la Tarelle de la Tour, the first consul of Anduze, although its realization was dated 1649. This detail highlights its roots in local history and its role as a symbol of prestige for the city. The fountain, a communal property, also illustrates the importance of public water points in the urban organization of medieval and modern cities, where they served as both a place of supply and a place of sociability.
Ranked a historic monument, the covered fountain of Anduze is today a protected heritage, bearing witness to the architectural and cultural heritage of the region. Its state of conservation and its central location on the Couverte Square make it a major point of interest for visitors. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its status as a key element of the Gardese heritage, linked to the history of Languedoc-Roussillon (now Occitanie).
