Origin and history
The Angers Engineering Museum is a space dedicated to the weapon of military engineering, inaugurated in 2009. Located in the department of Maine-et-Loire, it presents more than 1,000 historical pieces spread over 1,000 m2, illustrating the three fundamental missions of the Genie: fight, build and rescue. Permanent exhibitions take a multidisciplinary approach, combining history, science, technology and art to tell the evolution of this weapon over the centuries.
The museum is organized into four distinct spaces. The impregnation airlock offers an introduction sensitive to the diversity of the Genius. The chronological gallery highlights the important events that shaped the French identity and landscape. The thematic spaces explore the fields of action of Engineering (earth, water, air, fire), its great figures, its inventions and its trades. Finally, a reception area includes ticketing and shop.
The history of the Genius is evoked through quotations, such as that of General Dromard (1943-1945), emphasizing the role of the sappers in the front line during the fighting and their contribution to technical progress. The collections highlight key characters who have marked this weapon, while showing its constant adaptation to scientific and military challenges.
The museum is part of a local heritage network linked to Angers and Maine-et-Loire. It complements the resources on French military history, offering a technical, human and cultural vision of the Genie, from its origins to its contemporary missions.
