Origin and history
The chapel of the White Penitents, located in Mende in Occitanie, was built in the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, more precisely in 1657, by the brotherhood of the White Penitents. This modest but emblematic monument is part of the religious history of the city, while bearing witness to its defensive past. The chapel used a tower of medieval ramparts, partially destroyed in the late eighteenth century, to house the sacristan. Its rectangular plan, not oriented according to liturgical tradition, includes a large chapel in the east, called the choir of penitents. Inside, the high altar, still in place, is decorated with four twisted columns, an outstanding architectural element.
In 1724 a fence wall was added to the tower, marking an evolution of the building. The chapel, although of modest size, illustrates the importance of the brotherhoods of penitents in the spiritual and social life of Mende in modern times. These brotherhoods, often dedicated to charity and processions, played a central role in the local religious organization. The chapel was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 22 November 2013, recognizing its heritage value as both religious and military vestige.
Today, the chapel and the adjacent tower are the last visible testimonies of the ancient fortifications of Mende. Owned by the municipality, the building retains its historical character, although its current use (visits, rental, etc.) is not specified in the available sources. Its state of conservation and location, considered satisfactory a priori, make it an accessible site for lovers of Lozeria heritage.
