Origin and history

The former Jesuit college of Rodez, which is now part of the Foch High School, was founded in 1562 on the initiative of Cardinal Georges d'Armagnac, bishop of Rodez. The construction, entrusted to the Ruthenian architect Hugues de Bramarigues, sétala from 1619 to 1649 under the command of the Jesuits. This college, designed to spread knowledge among local elites, became a renowned establishment until the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1769, when it was transformed into a royal college. Its plan is inspired by the Gesù church in Rome, with a three-span nave, a walk-in, and a baroque façade decorated with statues of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis-Xavier.

The chapel, classified as a historical monument in 1927, illustrates the Jesuit architectural influence by its sober yet elegant style: painted wooden vaults, Corinthian pilasters, and a drumless dome. The Jesuits gave a central place to preaching, as evidenced by the pulpit close to the public and the forums for the great tributaries. Outside, the two-order facade, flanked by square bell towers, reflects the adaptation of the Italian Baroque. The college, renamed in the course of the regimes (Central School, Imperial High School), retained its academic reputation, forming figures such as Marshal Foch or artist Pierre Soulages.

In the 19th century, the site enriched with the fountain of Vors (1875–1900), carved by Denys Puech and registered in 1973, as well as the building of the gallery of the old high school, dated the 17th century. These elements, associated with the chapel, form a heritage complex marked by the educational and religious heritage of the Jesuits. The college also symbolizes French political change, moving from the Ancien Régime to the Republic while remaining a pole of excellence. Today, the Foch High School continues this tradition, while the classified remains recall the historical importance of the site.
