Origin and history
The former Hôtel-Dieu de Chartres, located in the department of Eure-et-Loir in the Centre-Val de Loire region, is a hospital built in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. The concierge, erected in 1866, forms the monumental entrance to the site, complemented by a chapel with coloured bricks and cut stones. This place is also marked by an 18th century grid, coming from the cathedral, acquired during the Revolution.
During the Second World War, the concierge of the Hôtel-Dieu became a tragic place: on the night of 17-18 June 1940, Jean Moulin, then prefect of Eure-et-Loir, was interrogated and tortured after refusing to obey the government's order of withdrawal. This historical fact contributed to its inscription as a historic monument on July 22, 2009.
After the transfer of the hospital in 1986, the site was converted into a centre of health and social action, housing a residence for the elderly, infant and child psychiatry services, and a centre for autism. One stele pays tribute to Gabriel Maunory, surgeon and local MP, while another commemorates the benefactors of the hospital, including Napoleon I.
The site's architecture is distinguished by its symmetrical pavilion and concierge, classified as a historical monument. These elements, combined with its history, make it a major memorial and heritage site of Chartres.
