Origin and history

The Old Auvillar Museum was created in 1930 by André Barié and the Old Auvillar Association. Its initial fund is based on donations from residents, supplemented by acquisitions. The collection has been enriched over the decades, including more than 600 ceramics produced in Auvillar and hundreds of other pieces from different French regions. The museum also preserves objects bearing witness to everyday life in the past, such as cooperry tools, locksmiths' tools, companions' works, musical instruments, clocks and calligraphy feathers.

La faience played a major economic role in Auvillar: between 1700 and 1909 the city had up to 400 potters per 2,000 inhabitants. The museum exhibits a 19th-century gouache book illustrating the decorations of local faiences, as well as instruments and scores from the award-winning Lyre Auvillarese band. A shop window is dedicated to the manufacture of feathers from the D.O., another flagship activity of the city in the 19th century. These collections reflect the crafts and cultural heritage that have shaped Auvillar's identity.

The museum is housed in classified buildings and benefits from the label Musée de France. Its official address, 12 Place de la Halle, corresponds to the historic heart of Auvillar, a village marked by its artisanal past. The available geographical data situate the museum with an accuracy considered fair (note 5/10), and its collections remain a living testimony to the missing or transformed local know-how.
