Origin and history
The old courthouse of Vensat, dated from the 18th century, is a vestige of the seigneurial judicial institutions of the region. It materialized the limits or authority of Lafond's justice, on which the land of Vensat depended. This type of pillar, often located in the vicinity of territories under private jurisdiction, symbolized the power of local lords over populations and common disputes.
The justice of Lafond, originally owned by the De Murat family since 1593, was acquired at the end of the seventeenth century by the Veyny d'Arbouze. The latter retained their property until the French Revolution. The most plausible hypothesis suggests that the laying of this terminal coincides with the purchase of Lafond by Jacques de Veyny d'Arbouze, although this precise dating is not formally attested by the available sources.
Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 20 January 1983, the terminal is now located in the garden of the Combe estate in Vensat (cadestre E 2). Its inscription reflects its importance as a material witness to the judicial structures of Ancien Régime en Auvergne, marked by the coexistence of seigneurial and royal rights. The current, although documented, location remains of poor accuracy according to modern geographical criteria.
