Old bridge on the Couze of the 14th century: classification by decree of 27 April 1908

Origin and history

The old bridge over the Couze de Coudes is a medieval monument located at the branch of the Allier and Couze, in the commune of Coudes. Built at the end of the 14th century, it is distinguished by its unique arch and its primitive structure, widely preserved despite centuries. A later addition, consisting of two panels of walls and a roof, was built against one of its abutments, slightly changing its original appearance.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 27 April 1908, this bridge illustrates the medieval civil architecture of the region. Its strategic location, at the confluence of two streams, suggests a historical role in local exchanges or river crossing. The accuracy of its dating (end of the 14th century) and its early ranking at the beginning of the 20th century underline its heritage importance.

Owned by the commune of Coudes, the bridge does not seem to be associated with specific contemporary uses (visits, rentals), although its state of conservation and legal protection make it a key element of the local heritage. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum database, confirm its status and approximate location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" in geographical data.
