Origin and history
The arcade house of Issoire represents the last vestige of an arcade place today disappeared. Its base, characterized by typical arcades, dates back to the 16th century, while the upper floors were rebuilt in the 18th century. This monument thus illustrates two distinct architectural periods, marked by techniques and styles specific to their time.
This building is also linked to French scientific history, as it was born in 1833 Gabriel Roux, a professor whose work prepared the discovery of antibiotics, including penicillin. The façade, with its arched ground floor and roofs, was classified as Historic Monument by decree of 9 July 1981, highlighting its heritage importance.
Located in Place de la République and at the corner of rue Pisavin, this house bears witness to medieval and modern urbanism in Issoire. Its present state, partially preserved, offers an overview of the old organisation of public spaces in the cities of Auvergne, where arcades served both as a shelter and a place of commerce.
