Origin and history
The archaeological site of Conjux-le-Port 3, immersed in the Lake Bourget, is one of the lake towns studied in the Rhône-Alpes region. These remains illustrate the human occupation in a wetland, with wooden support piles still visible today. These testimonies, dating from Neolithic to Bronze Age, constitute a major theme of European prehistory.
The site corresponds specifically to the period of the Final Bronze Age (10th-9th centuries BC). Located in contact with the Chautagne marsh, it opens onto the upper Rhone and houses an extensive platform where about fifteen sub-lake deposits have been identified. The dendrochronological dates of the neighbouring site of Conjux-Port 1, between -832 and -813, allowed to specify the installation pattern of the village.
These dates are comparable to those of the Chindrieux: Châtillon deposit, marked by an ultimate phase of littoral installation at the Final Bronze 3b. The site, classified by order of 24 October 2011, covers a pile area of 65 m x 34 m. It offers a unique overview of lake habitats of this time, with remains still preserved under the lake's waters.
