Origin and history

The Archeosite de Montans, located in Aussac, Tarn, is a cultural and scientific project designed to preserve and transmit the memory of a thousand-year-old archaeological heritage. It consists of a Conservation and Studies Centre (CCE) and a museum, two complementary entities. The CCE, reserved for researchers and students, houses collections from local excavations and extensive documentation, positioning the site as a reference for regional archaeology. The museum, organized according to a U-shaped plan inspired by Gallo-Roman villas, offers 400 m2 of permanent exhibitions, a treasure room for major rooms, and immersive reconstructions like a street and an antique house.

The educational component of the Archeosite includes an outdoor park of 5,000 m2 with a potter's workshop and a reconstituted sigilla oven, as well as fun activities for all audiences. Partner of national events, the site organizes thematic programming, as an annual week dedicated to Antiquity with historical demonstrations. This place combines scientific research, cultural mediation and immersive experience, while being part of the Musées de France network.

The location of the Archeosite, between Montans and Aussac, reflects its territorial anchor in the heart of the Gaillac-Graulhet Agglomeration, an area rich in Gallo-Roman remains. His official address (Avenue Élie Rossignol) and his label Musée de France underline his institutional role. The site is distinguished by its dual approach: professional preservation of artifacts on one side, and accessibility to the general public on the other, via adapted tools (temporary exhibitions, reconstitutions, workshops).
