Origin and history
The Inn of Notre-Dame, located in La Châtre in the Centre-Val de Loire, is a 15th-century building whose history is marked by the reuse of a religious statue. Originally, this statue of the Virgin, placed above the Notre-Dame gate of the city walls, was moved in 1700 when they were demolished. It was then installed against the façade of the inn, which took its present name. The Virgin with Child, protected by a bell-shaped dais surmounted by a cross, is accompanied by a lantern intended to illuminate candles.
Before becoming an inn, the building housed a convent, testifying to its initial religious use. Only the statue, the column that carries it and the awning that surmounts it are classified as Historic Monument since 1925. These elements, symbols of the local heritage, recall the link between the medieval town planning of La Châtre and its spiritual heritage. The exact address, 6 Place Notre-Dame, confirms its anchoring in the historic center of the city.
The accuracy of the location of this monument is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), although the available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, do not provide additional architectural details. Today, the hostel could offer services such as visits or accommodation, but this practical information is not explicitly documented in the sources consulted.
