Origin and history
The house at 8 rue des Augustins, at the corner of Schongauer Street in Colmar, is a building dating from about 1626. Originally, this building housed the courtyard of the lords of Ribeaupierre, an Alsatian noble family. Its architecture reflects the style of the first half of the seventeenth century, a period marked by a transition between Renaissance and classicism in the region.
The facades on the streets of Augustins and Schongauer, as well as the roofs, were listed as historical monuments on June 18, 1929. This classification reflects the historic importance of the place, although the house is best known for being the birthplace of Auguste Bartholdi, a sculptor famous for the Statue of Liberty. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected monument.
Colmar, the Alsatian city of Upper Rhine, was at that time a cultural and economic crossroads. Bourgeois houses like this often served as residences for influential families or places of local power. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the social and urban organization of Alsace in the seventeenth century, between medieval heritage and emerging modernity.
