Origin and history

L'aven d'Orgnac is a remarkable cave located in the commune of Orgnac-l'Aven, in the department of Ardèche, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Drained in a limestone massif, it is distinguished by its huge rooms and spectacular concretions, making it a major tourist site since its discovery. Ranked Grand Site of France, it is also an important archaeological place, with traces of human occupation dating from the final Achulean, delivering lithic remains with Levallois flowing among the oldest known in France.

The cave was discovered on 19 August 1935 by Robert de Joly and a team of speleologists, guided by local residents who knew the existence of a gulf called "Aven du Bertras". From this first exploration, the tourist aspect was considered, driven by Joly's enthusiasm and beauty. The municipality of Orgnac-l The cave was an immediate success, attracting thousands of visitors despite the disruptions of the Second World War.

In a complex geological context, marked by four major phases: the formation of Urgonian limestones at the lower Cretaceous, the crisis of Messinian salinity, the marine transgression of the Pliocene, and the development of sub-horizontal karst networks at the Quaternary. These processes have shaped its immense rooms, such as the Joly Hall or the Red Halls, as well as its spectacular concretions, some of which reach impressive dimensions. The cave is also a major archaeological site, with the deposit of Orgnac III, occupied from 312,000 years B.C.E.

The tourism development of the Aven was marked by tensions between conservation and exploitation, notably after the discovery of the networks of Orgnac II, III and IV in the years 1965-1966. These extensions multiplied by five the known size of the cave, but their access was restricted for reasons of preservation, leading to conflicts between the communes of Orgnac-l-Aven and d-Issirac. In 2004, the site won the Grand Site de France label, strengthening its protection and enhancement, with developments such as the Cité de la Préhistoire opened in 2014.

The management of Orgnac shows a delicate balance between tourism and preservation. As early as 1939, protective measures were put in place, such as by-laws limiting construction around the site. In 1946, the cave was classified as natural monuments, and its perimeter was expanded in 1974 and again in 2005-2006 to include new galleries and surface grounds. Despite historical disagreements, notably with the neighbouring town of Issirac, an agreement signed in 1978 regulated access to underground networks, while ensuring sustainable management of the site.

Today, Orgnac attracts around 140,000 visitors a year, offering tours of the furnished rooms, framed speleological activities, and a museum dedicated to Prehistory. Its integration into the regional tourist landscape, especially in connection with the gorges of the Ardèche, has made this site a major hub of underground tourism in France, combining scientific discovery, preservation of heritage and economic attractiveness.
