Origin and history

The Aveyron Prefecture Hotel, also known as Hotel Le Normant d'Ayssènes, is an 18th-century building located in Charles de Gaulle Square, in the heart of Rodez. Built in the first half of the 18th century by François Le Normant d'Ayssènes, king's adviser and receiver in Rodez's election, it illustrates the classical architecture of the era, with a symmetrical facade, a court of honor closed by a gate, and wings in return.

Acquired in 1823 by the department of Amans-Joseph-Henri de Séguret, the hotel became the prefecture of Aveyron in 1825, replacing the former bishopric. In 1829 the departmental architect Étienne-Joseph Boissonnade enlarged the building on the east side. A hemicycle for the departmental assembly was added in 1982 under the gardens. Since 1947, its facades and roofs have been partially listed as historical monuments.

The hotel is distinguished by its history linked to the royal and then departmental administration. Its original owner, François Le Normant d'Ayssènes, was a Norman established in Rouergue as a Treasury official. The transformation into prefecture in the 19th century reflects post-revolutionary administrative reorganizations, while its successive extensions reflect the evolution of institutional needs.

Today, the building remains a symbol of departmental power, combining architectural heritage and public service. Its central location, in a major square of Rodez, reinforces its role in the civic and historical life of the city.
