Origin and history

The Espinas farm, also known as Mas de l'Espinass, is an emblematic building located in the municipality of Montselgues, in the Ardèche. Built in the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, this farm is distinguished by its granite and sandstone architecture, typical of the fortified rural buildings of the period. It presents a U-shaped plan, bringing together houses, stables and barn around a paved courtyard, reflecting an autarchic and defensive agricultural organization. A notable feature is the presence of a large hiding place built in a hollow vault of barn, probably built during the Wars of Religion to house people or property in case of danger.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 24 October 1988, the farm illustrates the adaptation of rural buildings to the political and religious disturbances of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its double ground floor and its robust materials (granite, sandstone) demonstrate a desire for durability and protection. An inscription engraved in 1651 suggests a precise dating of its construction or a major phase of work, although the exact origins of the site remain partially documented.

The Espinas farm is today an architectural testimony of the ardèche fortified farms, characteristic of an area marked by recurrent conflicts. Open to the public during the European Heritage Days and on request, it allows you to discover a preserved rural heritage, where you can mix agricultural history, defensive strategies and local constructive know-how. Its ranking among historical monuments underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its role in the social history of the Ardèche.
