Origin and history
The bakery located at 64 rue Saint-Dominique, in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, was built around 1900 by the Benoist and Fils workshop, specialized in commercial decors. Its architecture is distinguished by a front with painted canvases fixed under glass, typical of the artisanal signs of the time. This shop, restored in 1988, illustrates the aesthetics of Parisian boutiques of the first quarter of the 20th century, where crafts and local businesses played a central role in everyday life.
The front and interior decoration of the bakery were inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of May 23, 1984, recognizing their heritage value. This type of teaching, often neglected, is, however, evidence of the evolution of the oral professions and their integration into the Parisian urban landscape. Painted canvases, a rare and fragile element, also reflect the advertising techniques of the time, mixing utility and ornaments to attract customers.
The 7th arrondissement, at this time, was a changing district, where artisans, traders and a rising bourgeoisie lived. Bakeries, places of sociability, occupied an essential place, providing bread and pastries to a growing population. Their careful decor, like that of this bakery, responded to a desire to stand out in a competitive environment, while being part of a Parisian aesthetic tradition.
