Origin and history
The Bailiage de Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier is a 15th century historical monument located in the commune of Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This building, whose official address is 16 rue de Paris, is listed in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 58264, in the Nièvre department. Its most remarkable element, a decorated ceiling, was classified by decree on August 21, 1927, giving the site official heritage protection.
In medieval times, bailiffs were essential judicial and administrative institutions in the territorial organisation of the Kingdom of France. The Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier building, built in the 15th century, is part of a context where these buildings served as a place of local power, often associated with the management of seigneuries or royal estates. The region, then marked by a rural and artisanal economy, saw these buildings play a central role in conflict regulation and law enforcement.
The location of the bailliage, although documented (16 rue de Paris and approximately 32 Rue de la Chaussée de l'Étang), remains imprecise according to modern criteria, with a note of 6/10 for the reliability of the coordinates. This geographical uncertainty contrasts with the official recognition of the monument, emphasized by its partial classification in 1927. No additional information is available on its current use, whether it be visits, rentals or accommodation.
