Origin and history
The bakery of the Tower, located at 53 rue de La Tour in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, was built in the early 20th century by the Benoist and Sons workshop. This historic monument is distinguished by its front adorned with paintings fixed under glass, depicting scenes of mills, characteristic of the decorative craftsmanship of the era. These elements, as well as the interior decoration, were protected by an inscription as Historic Monuments in 1984, reflecting their heritage value.
Originally dedicated to the manufacture and sale of bread, the bakery retained its period aspect until 1991, when it was transformed into a travel agency. This change in usage marks an evolution of the local shops in the area, while partially preserving the architectural and artistic heritage of the place. The workshop Benoist et Fils, responsible for decorating, illustrates the know-how of Parisian artisans of the early twentieth century, specialized in signs and commercial decorations.
Today, the front and interior decoration of the old bakery remain the only protected elements, offering a glimpse of the commercial and craft aesthetics of Paris at the turn of the century. Although the site has lost its original function, its inscription in the title of Historic Monuments ensures the preservation of this heritage, while stressing the importance of ancient signs in the Parisian urban landscape.
